Subject: Spice Finds a Friend

To break the tedium of his recuperation/imprisonment, Spice gets to spend some supervised time out of the foster room. He and Sunny, a former campus cat, have struck up a companionable relationship. Nonetheless, Spice is ready to return to his adoring fans.

Subject: Spice Report

Spice yearns to be free, but the vet felt he should not remove the sutures until the end of the week. So Spice is still under house arrest but is off all meds and treatments. He will make his triumphant return to campus next Monday. Thanks for all the support he's received.

Subject: Request from Rattler Reporter

Hello again. Alexander Eakins is writing a story for the Rattler about the Tanuja challenge, and he's interested in asking a few questions from donors. (See below.) If you want to help him and promote For Paws, please contact Alexander directly. Thanks!
Is anyone who donated to the Tanuja Challenge willing to answer a few questions for the Rattler? We'd appreciate your input and your help in promoting the For Paws cause!

Subject: Meet Precious

Precious was rescued in the Marian Hall parking lot Tuesday night. When we took her to the vet, we found she had already been spayed and DECLAWED! She desperately needs an indoor home ASAP.
Precious is about a year old, friendly, small (7 lbs.), and up to date on her vaccinations, including Feline Leukemia. (Her combo test was negative.) Please spread the word about Precious; we hate to release her on campus without her first line of defense. Thanks.

Subject: Spice News

Spice is making progress every day. He's eating very well and using the litter box. His medical treatment this week consists of one antibiotic pill per day plus using a syringe full of antiseptic solution to flush out the deepest wound, followed by antibiotic ointment. He is a very patient patient!
If you haven't seen St. Mary's Facebook page, check out all the wonderful comments. Thanks for your support.

Subject: Spice Update #2

After more IV fluids, another antibiotic shot, and a steroid shot, Spice finally started eating a little bit last night! He also looks more alert and aware of his surroundings. He's not 100% yet, but he's on the road to recovery. Thanks for all your prayers and good wishes.

Subject: Thoughts on Dogs
Westside Dog Initiative
It's terrible that Spice was attacked by dangerous dogs. It's sad that the dangerous dogs were very likely euthanized. It's discouraging that some of our neighbors are irresponsible dog owners. We've cried, cursed, and complained, so now what do we do?
Recently Nettie and I attended a meeting of the Westside Dog Initiative, a group formed by some bright, energetic twenty-somethings who want to make a difference for dogs, their owners, and their neighborhoods. (Please read their attached statement for more information, particularly the section on how you can help.)
Here's what we can do: Spread the word about WDI; get them connected with the larger animal rescue community; and donate the proceeds from the Halloween sock dogs sale to WDI. If you care about dogs, please share this information with others who want to help. Thanks.

Subject: Spice Update

By now many of you have heard that Spice was attacked by three dogs Sunday afternoon. He had surgery at the Animal Emergency Room and is on antibiotics and pain meds. This morning Dr. Beissner at Blue Cross gave him I.V. fluids and additional antibiotics. Spice still has a high fever and no appetite at all.
Spice was sitting by the library entrance when the dogs attacked without warning. Fortunately, Stephanie Keys saw them and alerted Joe; they chased the dogs away, and Spice ran up a tree. Physical Plant brought a ladder, and Joe did the most amazing one-handed rescue of an injured cat I've ever seen. Campus police caught the dogs, and Animal Care Services picked them up immediately. Earlier, the dogs were reported chasing joggers on campus.
