Subject: Out, Out, Damned Spot

After the Grounds crew trapped a possum at Charles Francis, they cemented over the hole that possums and other creatures used to get under the building. However, Spot, a For Paws regular, was under the building and was imprisoned for several days before we figured out where he was. We could hear a faint meow but could not see him—what to do??? Call University Police, of course! Very soon Officers Castaneda and Trevino were leading us through the building, looking for a way to get to Spot. When no way was found, they called in Groundskeepers Fernando Mireles and Frank Palacios who sledge-hammered their way through the cement to open a passageway for Spot. So rather than ending up entombed like an Edgar Allen Poe cat, Spot is safely above ground, thanks to these compassionate men. Thanks, guys!

Subject: Award Winner

Yesterday the San Antonio Feral Cat Coalition held its annual awards ceremony at the Ft. Sam Golf Club. The place was packed with big-time cat trappers, representatives from the major spay/neuter clinics, the Animal Care Services director, and community-minded cat supporters. I'm proud to announce Nettie and I won the Proctor Award for our work with For Paws. Geoff and Pam Proctor provided TNR for over 400 cats just south of campus before there was much in the way of grants or subsidized surgeries; they were TNR pioneers. We're honored to carry on their work. Thanks for your support.

Subject: Waffle(AKA Charlie) Gets Home

Waffle, the kitten formerly known as Charlie, has his forever home! First sighted on campus by student Bonita Babu, the orange tabby now resides with law professor Bonita Roberts. Bonnie reports that she is “impressed with his intelligence, quickness, and fearlessness,” not to mention his loud purr and loving nature. I loved fostering him for just those reasons! Thanks to the two Bonitas and to all of you for your support.

Subject: Jonathon and Houdini

Jonathon has been living at the Woodlawn Marianist Community since 2009, when we trapped and neutered him. Last week the Brothers saw that he was limping and notified us. We took him to the vet for a long-lasting antibiotic shot, and he should be good as new in a few days. We appreciate the excellent care the Brothers give Jonathon and are always happy to help out when we can. And just in time for Halloween, the grounds crew trapped Houdini who was neutered on Friday. When returned on Saturday, the sleek black beauty headed for home across Camino Santa Maria. Hope he hides out on Halloween! Thanks for your support.
