Demographic Data @ Census.gov

The Census Bureau operates an International Programs Center (IPC) which performs studies, collects and disseminates some international data, and offers technical assistance to other countries' demographic and statistical programs. Their publications page lists all their available reports. Many are available online as PDF documents but some must be ordered or requested from the Bureau. Reports cover demographic, economic and health-related subjects.

The IPC maintains a page which gives census dates worldwide for the past 50 years and a list of links to other countries statististical agencies' web pages. Their International Data Base and World Population Information pages are described in more detail below.

The International Data Base covers 227 countries and provides information for at least some of these countries back to 1950 and projections to 2020. The extent of coverage for different countries is variable, since the database has been buildt in response to research needs. You may download the entire program and database to your own computer, or choose specific data elements and countries by means of drop-down menus. This selected data can be displayed or downloaded in a format to be used in spreadsheet software, with many user-defined options available. NOTE: This database is a major compilation of official data from around the world. It is not updated frequently.

The World Population Information page gives current information (including an up-to-the-minute world population estimate and a table showing births and deaths per units of time) and some general historical data, including graphs and tables showing population increase rates and estimates back to pre-historical times. The latest World Population Profile is for 1998, available in PDF and other formats, including Lotus versions of all tables.

A quick way to find international data at Census.gov is to look at "I" under the "Subjects A-Z" links at the upper left corner of the main page.

Economic Data @ Census.gov

Census.gov does not offer data on economic conditions in other countries directly, except as some of this data might be included in the surveys and links discussed above. But there is information on economic activity between the U.S. and its trading partners. U.S. International Trade in Goods and Services Highlights gives information for the most current month and more general information, including some historical data, can be found through their Foreign Trade Statistics portal.

Data in the Blume Library

The Blume Library receives any printed reports dealing with international data that the Census Bureau makes available to depository libraries. In recent years, however, very few reports have been issued. Most of the titles listed below are from the 1970's and 1980's.

(Not produced currently) Published in the late 1970's and early 1980's, these reporst give population, social and economic characteristics for several, mostly developing, countries. These are the countries whose reports are held by the Library: Bangladesh, Botswana, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ghana, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kenya, Liberia, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Pakistan, Panama, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Turkey.

International Population Series. C 3.186:P-95/ . (very irregular) Sub-series of the Current Population Reports. Early reports in this series gave demographic and economic data for some Communist countries; more recently, reports give worldwide information on a particular subject, like aging or health. The most recent report is a 2001 edition of An Aging World (C 3.186:P-95/01-1).

Women of the World. C 3.2:W 84. (Not produced currently) Series of four regional reports (published in the early 1980's) and a summary chartbook giving demographic, social, economic and fertility statistics on women, mostly in developing countries.
