| This set of guides describes the collection of Census Bureau publications in the St. Mary's Blume Library and the Census data available on the World Wide Web. A concluding section covers some topics which may make understanding and using Census data easier, such as Census geographic concepts and comparability of data between different Censuses. |
The Blume Library receives many publications of the Census Bureau in paper format, microfiche and CD-ROM. The classification for these documents in the Library Documents Collection is C 3. Most of the publications are accessible through the Online Catalog. Other indexes which provide specialized access are the American Statistics Index (located in the Reference Area), the Catalog of Government Publications (through this link the index is only available in the library or remotely only to St. Mary's students, faculty and staff; a freely available version is provided by GPO Access).
If you are using the paper version of this guide, you can find a list of hypertext URLs for the links cited in the guide at the end.
| NOTE: The instructions for using the Census.gov web pages are current as of January, 2005. The Bureau of the Census changes and fine-tunes their pages regularly. Consequently, selected items in the descriptions may be different from the online source. We do our best to keep this information up to date in a timely manner. |
There are many other sources of help with Census data--Census.gov has a wealth of explanatory pages and resources and other libraries have compiled guides and links collections which may be helpful. Some of the best of these resources can be found at the end of the "Special Issues" section of this guide. I would like to offer special thanks to Daniel Cornwall, of the Alaska State Library, whose Census Tutorial was invaluable to me as I was developing and writing this guide.
The Census Bureau makes a wide variety of newsfeeds available on many different subjects so that you can be kept up to date on the Bureau's recent activities in these areas.
(Another Guide in this series--Government Information: Basic Guide--covers the Documents Collection in general, with descriptions of the basic access methods. Additional Guides discuss other specialized topics.)
