Final Report of the National Gambling Impact Study Commission
(Y 3.2:G 14)

Congress called two years ago for the formation of a Commission to conduct a comprehensive study of the social and economic implications of gambling in the U.S. (enabling legislation was Public Law 104-169). Their final report was released this summer and is available in paper format (with CD appendices) in the Academic Library. It is also available online at the University of North Texas' "Cybercemetary," a collection of websites that are no longer supported "live" by their agencies. The address for the Gambling Commission report is govinfo.library.unt.edu/ngisc/index.html.

The report presents a general overview of types of gambling and a legal and regulatory survey of state and federal efforts in this area. There are also chapters on "problem gambling," gambling on the internet and in Native American tribal areas. A final chapter examines the impact of gambling on "people and places." Appendices in the printed volume give the text of the enabling legislation, background information on the Commission members, substantial lists of references and sources of information, a glossary, index and a catalog of gambling laws, regulations and ordinances.

Supplementary material to the report is on two CDs which are on Reserve and can be checked out for 7 days from the Circulation Desk or used on the Reserve CDs workstation near the Reference Desk. This material includes full research reports, some with spreadsheet data, and full texts of federal and state gambling laws and regulations. Most of the reports are in Word format, with data tables readable by Excel. The legislation/regulation CD contains material in Word and in Adobe Acrobat formats. The Acrobat reader software is included on the CD.
