North American Industry Classification System

The Academic Library recently received two copies of this manual, which outlines and explains the NAICS. One copy is on permanent reserve at the Circulation Desk on the main floor of the Library. The other copy is at the Reference Desk. If usage patterns eventually indicate that one copy is sufficient for in-Library use, the reserve copy will be moved to the stacks and allowed to circulate.

This system (NAICS) of classifying economic enterprises and other organizations is intended to replace the Standard Industrial Classification System, which was last revised in 1987. The NAICS incorporates the rapid technological changes of the past decade by allowing for the classification of businesses dealing with matters that were not even in existence at the time of the last SIC revision. Another reason for this massive reorganization is to bring the statistics-gathering and reporting activities of the U.S., Canada and Mexico under one system.

This manual includes a detailed listing (up to the 6-digit level) of the classification codes, a numerical list of short titles, a cross-reference from NAICS to SIC (and the reverse) and an alphabetical index.

There is more information about NAICS at the Census Bureau and at this site provided by Georgetown University
