Attendance: Chris Anglim, Pat Broome, Camille Fiorillo, Amory Irby, Michael Kaminski, Wilson Plunkett, Claudia Shaw, Ruby Wehmeyer and Kathy Amen.
Fast lane announcement: Next Tuesday and Wednesday SAPL will not have access to their physical collection as there will be a film crew in their area filming "Spy Kids II." Wilson does not have information as to whether Antonio Banderas will be in the building.
Camille reported that CORAL will be having a meeting Nov. 9 and they are asking all interest groups to send representatives, as they will be discussing the continuing affiliations of the groups. We decided that we would just as soon stay affiliated with CORAL, as long as there is a CORAL, and Chris said he could attend the meeting at SAPL.
Kathy and Chris will divide up the sessions of the FDLC they attended and write up a report. Kathy will put the report on the St. Mary's website and let everyone know when it's available. Chris brought the conference handouts in case anyone wanted copies. After reading the report, if you want copies, just let Chris or Kathy know.
Biennial surveys are coming up. If anyone has concerns about a question, let Kathy know and she will ask for the group's opinion via email, since the surveys are due before our next meeting. Somewhat on this subject, Wilson reported that he had not gotten a response from the State Library regarding the revision of the state plan.
TLU's director is retiring and Martha Rinn, whom many of us have met at previous meetings there, will be taking over in January.
Other announcements: TLU is getting an electronic classroom with their TIF money, and SAPL is going wireless with theirs, plus getting some laptops for remote instruction sessions; Trinity is also becoming wireless, as of today!
The program for our meeting was Wilson showing us how to get some good Census 2000 information from the Census web site. He showed us how to get tract-level data, although it's important to remember that only Summary File 1 (100%) data is currently available. The good stuff (income, education, etc.) comes from the sample questionnaires and won't be out for a while. Wilson also showed us the great new mapping features of the web site, and how to use the address lookup feature, when you don't know the census tract number of an area. As far as downloading is concerned, he's had to do some cleanup when saving tables as comma delimited files, but they do open up in spreadsheet software. There was some discussion of the new race categories used by the 2000 Census. For more information on Census information, you can take a look at Daniel Cornwall's (late of UTSA) Census tutorials.
Our next meeting will be our Christmas lunch at Trinity's Skyline Room Faculty Club, at 11:30 on December 7. If you need information on prices, or directions to the restaurant, contact Ruby at rwehmeye@trinity.edu.
Respectfully submitted,
Kathy Amen, Secretary/Treasurer
