San Antonio Public Main Library

Attendance: Sally Bauer (briefly), Dorothy Blow, Pat Broome, Rhonda Davila, Amory Irby, Tina Petimezas, Claudia Shaw and Kathy Amen.

First news from our hosts. SAPL continues to received documents on hazardous waste at Kelly. Some folks from the EPA even visited them recently to consult this collection. Wilson gave a patent workshop late last year for interested parties in the area and plans to give more. He was off at the Health Science Center giving a Census workshop while our meeting was going on. Dorothy called our attention to some improvements in the Census Bureau web page that make it easier to find Census 2000 data. Recently received (back to about 2000) documents are now in the catalog at SAPL.

We had a brief discussion on search engines. Google is popular, but Kathy was surprised more people hadn't heard of ixquick (www.ixquick.com), which is the favorite among St. Mary's librarians.

Tina reiterated her advice to check for changed PURLs using GODORTs PURL Alert service. (www2.lib.udel.edu/godort/cataloging/alert/).

We finished the meeting by taking a tour of the SAPL docs area, which is graced by nifty new signs distinguishing U.S. from Texas docs shelves. We also got to examine Rhonda's current display (soon to be taken down in favor of a tax-time display), which features the basics of copyright law and fair use. It's listed on the docs displays website administered by Minnesota State Univ. (www.lib.mankato.msus.edu/lib/govdoc/proj/displays/copyright/copyright1.html). Dorothy asked for our suggestions on what to do with their miscellaneous collection of large maps. Kathy suggested filing by section of the world, rather than publisher or agency, which is how she does the maps at St. Mary's.

Our next meeting will be at the St. Mary's Law Library on April 5 at 2 p.m. (NOTE: afternoon rather than morning meeting time.)

Respectfully submitted,

Kathy Amen, Secretary/Treasurer
