Attendance: John Barnett, Darcy Del Bosque, Amory Irby, Michael Kaminski, Ben Longoria, Victor Lopez, Tina Mesa, Tina Petimezas, Claudia Shaw, Steve Wise, and Kathy Amen.
Kathy reported on the Federal Depository Library Conference she attended in Virginia last month. The report, together with links to web sites and emails mentioned is at library.stmarytx.edu/acadlib/doc/sa/fdlcs/fdlc02.htm.
Several folks had items to announce and discuss in addtion. Here is a summary:
Michael is reviewing the workflow in his department and would appreciate it if we could send him descriptions of the work done by librarians and technicians in our various libraries. His email is: mkaminsk@trinity.edu. Try to send him the information before the next meeting so that he can ask any follow-up questions then.
John reported that UTSA is getting the FEMA flood maps for Bexar and surrounding (AACOG) counties. FEMA makes them available free to universities. They have not actually gotten any yet, and we will be interested to learn how big a collection this becomes, how often it is updated and other details of its administration.
Tina had lots of news from SAC. They have written up a very clever newsletter--"Library Soup"--(motto: "It's good for you"). They also have acquired a large scanner and plan to digitize their college newspaper. Tina indicated there might be some possibility of sharing the scanner for other projects. SAC has also subscribed to Rand Texas Stats, which Tina hopes will be a good substitute for Statistical Universe, at least for Texas data. Their website, for more info, is http://tx.rand.org/tx.rand.org/. Tina's contact person is jennifer@randstatistics.org.
TLU has started loading their Marcive records. They also have started getting ERIC reports online. This is a PDF service.
OLLU also has the online ERIC, but Steve reported that they have had a fair amount of trouble with it. Among other things, the quality of the PDFs isn't always very good. OLLU also started a chat reference service in September and so far it has proven popular and hasn't caused too many technical problems. They would also like to become a depository, but since there haven't been any new Congressional districts created in our area lately that might not be possible. We applaud Steve's continuing to carry the docs message, though, and hope to see him at meetings often!
Thanks to Darcy and John for the great refreshments (Krispy Kreme does raise the bar for the rest of us, you realize!) and for welcoming us to their lovely facility.
Our next meeting will be our annual Christmas lunch at the Trinity Faculty Club on Dec. 6. Meet at 11:30.
Respectfully submitted,
Kathy Amen, Secretary/Treasurer
