Attendance: Pat Broome, Camille Fiorillo, Amory Irby, Myrna Langford, Tina Petimezas, Ruby Wehmeyer, and Kathy Amen.
We talked about some up-and-coming new technology. People are concerned about DVD and whether we will need it for the new census. No one seems to know for sure, but any new computers should be purchased with DVD players as it's pretty certain eventually we will need them. Also, they supposedly will play old CDs as well. Microfiche scanners have also been discussed on govdoc-l. Camille will see if Tina Mesa can get a demonstration set up for us to see the Brodart or some other version of this machine. We also talked about what to do with superceded CDs as there seems to be no easy way to recycle them. Crafts projects seem the most likely outlet. Kathy wondered if people might take them at a flea market, but an even better idea might be to offer them to our art departments, or perhaps to schools.
Camille gave us more details about the "A&M at Palo Alto" situation. They have had preliminary meetings with the A&M Kingsville librarians. PA will be offering some new programs that will require a lot of new materials, or at least some cooperative way for students to get the materials elsewhere. Most notable of the new programs is nursing, which PA does do at all at present. There will also be new psychology, education, and other programs.
In her other capacity as SAPL Board President, Camille let us know that they now have 31 applicants for the director's job and will be interviewing finalists later in the month.
Trinity has not re-advertised for their documents/business librarian position since they are still debating the tenure question for librarians there. This issue is expected to be settled soon, though.
St. Mary's is looking at getting some selective retrospective cataloging from Marcive, probably just the Serial Set (back to 1976) and the ERIC depository microfiche. Marcive has a $2000 minimum for such projects, with a $.07 per record charge.
We adjourned to PA's nice computer instruction room to look at the test catalog for the Community College District's new III catalog, which is due to be loaded during spring break. We all agreed it was a very nice interface and we like the way it displays URLs for electronic documents (at least the way it usually displays them).
Our next meeting will be held at the Trinity Library on March 31 at 9:00 a.m. We may be meeting in a different room within the Library; when Kathy sends out a reminder about the meeting, she'll include the room location.
Respectfully submitted,
Kathy Amen, Secretary/Treasurer
