March 7, 2003

Texas Lutheran University Blumberg Library

Attendance:  Linda Barr (TLU Systems Librarian), Darcy Del Bosque, Camille Fiorillo, Amory Irby, Michael Kaminski, Ben Longoria, Azucena Rodriguez-Guerra, Claudia Shaw and Kathy Amen.

Martha Rinn, TLU Library Director, dropped by to give us a cordial welcome.

Michael and Kathy (and maybe John) will be attending the FDLC in Reno next month and will report on what sounds like its momentous doings at our next meeting.

The state institutions are feeling the budget crunch with a hiring freeze at UTSA and even a lay-off (of a temporary position in circulation) at Palo Alto.

Announcements/questions by library:

The Dean of the University of North Texas library school will be at Palo Alto the morning of March 28 and at the Public Library later that day. If any of your students are interested in a library career, encourage them to come and talk to her.

Darcy wants to develop the local documents collection at UTSA and asked for insights and assistance. Michael thinks that the contacts list that Myrna developed could be helpful and will send it to Darcy. He also hopes to work on Trinity's collection this spring. There was general bemoaning (how many years have we been doing this?) of the state of local documents distribution, but we certainly wish Darcy well and will help in whatever way we can. Trinity and SAPL have historically had the most comprehensive and/or up-to-date collections of this material.

Michael is gaining more expertise and experience with GIS topics. He recently worked with an urban studies class at Trinity that used GIS extensively in developing a class project dealing with school district boundaries. We are glad to know that this sort of expertise is being developed locally and Michael will keep us up to date on Trinity's acquisition of hardware, materials, etc., in this area. Ruby will be having her hip replacement surgery next week. We all signed a card for Michael to give her and wish her a speedy recovery and return to work.

Kathy is printing selected electronic-only documents and is working on a procedure for noting them in the catalog so that their usage can be tracked. She is also saving electronic versions of important documents on the library's server as alternative access point, should the government versions disappear.

After our general information-sharing session, Linda demonstrated TLU's new Elmo projection system, which is situated in a nice open area on the ground floor of the library. The system can function as a normal overhead projector, but can also project 3-dimensional images. Really cool! We also looked at the catalog display for several documents; Linda is working on getting the URLs for electronic documents to display automatically.

After the meeting we enjoyed a nice lunch near campus.

Our next meeting will be May 2 at San Antonio College at 9:30 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Kathy Amen, Secretary/Treasurer
