Attendance: Rhonda Davila, Amory Irby, Michael Kaminski, Myrna Langford, Marcia LeGrand, Victor Lopez, Tina Mesa, Tina Petimezas, Wilson Plunkett, Claudia Shaw and Kathy Amen.
Welcome to Michael, the new head of documents at Trinity.
Highlights of the meeting:
a look at Rhonda's wonderful internet history display, which was very interesting and showed evidence of the great amount of research work she put into it. It has been very popular with the library's patrons, and Rhonda would be glad to loan it out as a traveling display for anyone who is interested.
Wilson's description of the patent resources the library is amassing and a look at the nice workstation the Patent and Trademark Office has supplied. A few technical difficulties remain, but Wilson is hopeful the whole system can be up and running soon. They have also been receiving a great deal of printed material from the PTO.
The rest of the time was spent in a general discussion of topics of current interest, along with a few announcements:
New minimum technical requirements. SAC has successfully used these requirements to get their administration to provide state-of-the-art workstations for the library. This lead to a discussion of DVDs and GIS capabilities in our area. SAPL will have a large collection of DVDs when the patent backfiles are all received, and we'll all be getting Census DVDs for the 2000 information. No one seems to know if paper products will be produced, but we "old-timers" remember that it sounded like we wouldn't be getting paper for the 1990 information, and still we did. It sounds like SAC is the best equipped library for GIS applications.
Letter from GPO re budget cuts. Myrna brought a copy of a letter written by Trinity's director which demonstrates his concern with these cuts and which alerts the rest of the library staff to problems related to them.
The Depository Library Council meeting in San Antonio next April. We will probably be involved in organizing a reception for the 150 or so council members and attendees, and perhaps with other logistical arrangements. It should be a very interesting meeting, as not all of the budget/electronic/access/preservation issues facing our field will be likely to be solved at the meeting in October. Kathy will have more details about what we can do to help with the meeting after visiting with Sheila McGarr at the FDLC next month.
Cataloging of URLs. The UTSA catalogers wanted to know what the rest of us were doing about online titles. It seems that, since most of the other libraries are getting Marcive's cataloging, they are automatically adding these items to their catalogs. When UTSA gets their Voyager system up and running in a week or so, all of the area academic libraries will have web-based catalogs that can directly link to the cataloged items with 856 fields.
NTDB CDs will be stopping soon. Whether depositories will have better access to the online version is something Kathy and Michael will hopefully find out at the FLDC next month. We will also hope for more definite news regarding Census products.
Kelly reports. SAPL has a large collection of environmental impact and review reports from Kelly in their office, and is beginning to get similar material from some of the other local military installations.
Legal information. A couple of libarians at the St. Mary's Law Library are interested in doing outreach-type workshops to familiarize non-legal types with legal research methods and materials. A possible future project could be a workshop co-sponsored by them and by our group. They would also be glad to put on programs for us. If any of you have ideas for these kinds of programs, things you would like to know more about in the legal field, let Kathy know and she'll pass the ideas along.
St. Mary's Academic Library is in the midst of a partial retrospective conversion. Materials cataloged so far are the GPO ERIC fiche and publications of the Judiciary committees. Other series to be cataloged include most of the Congressional committees, USGS series, BLS bulletins, etc.
[This is an announcement Kathy forgot to make] On October 13 (it is Friday, but who's counting?) the Academic Library at St. Mary's will be officially renamed the Louis J. Blume Library, in honor of a past president of the University.
Our next meeting will be held at Texas Lutheran University's library at 9:30 a.m. on November 3. Michael and Kathy will be reporting at that meeting on what they learned at the FDLC in late October.
Respectfully submitted,
Kathy Amen, Secretary/Treasurer
