November 3, 2000

Texas Lutheran University Blumberg Library

Attendance: Chris Anglim, Ben Bates (TLU student worker), Vicki Eckhardt, Myrna Langford, Candy Peterson (SAC periodicals librarian), Tina Petimezas, Martha Rinn, Ruby Wehmeyer and Kathy Amen.

Most of the meeting consisted of a review of the Federal Depository Library Conference (FDLC), held last week in D.C., and attended by a record-setting three local librarians:  Chris, Michael and Kathy. There are two attachments to these minutes which summarize the review: Michael's very thorough and well-written summary of the current state of affairs, budget-and policy-wise, of the program and GPO in general; and a session-by-session review (taken from the three attendees' notes) of the programs presented at the conference.

We did spend some time discussing the upcoming Depository Library Council meeting, which will be held in San Antonio April 1-3, 2001. The meeting will be considerably different from the last such meeting held here in the early 1980's. Nowadays these "secondary" Council meetings closely resemble the large FDLC, just on a slightly smaller scale. This is good news for libraries in our area, as we will have a chance not only to see Council in action and participate directly in their deliberations, but will also have the opportunity to attend a few days of programs.

It also means, however, that GPO will be calling on us for assistance. Sheila has already emailed everyone asking for program ideas; let her know of any good programs you've seen at TLA or other meetings, if they would be of interest to docs people and could be put on by people in the South Texas area. We will also have something to do with a reception to be held for Council members and attendees on Monday evening, April 2. Wilson has secured the use of the Downtown SAPL auditorium for the party, and Marcive will be underwriting the costs. Joan Chapa from Marcive joined Chris, Michael and Kathy in a meeting with Sheila McGarr from GPO at the FDLC where we discussed details for the reception as well as program ideas for the meeting. Some other vendors have asked Sheila about sponsoring something at the April meeting, and she suggested perhaps coffee break refreshments (GPO provides drinks but no eats). I have not heard from any of these vendors yet but will let the group know when I do. We may want to offer to provide rides from the airport, or other types of transportation to meeting attendees, and Sheila may call on us for other miscellaneous local arrangements help if she needs it. She expects 150 or so people to be at the meeting (we think spring in San Antonio might attract a few more).

Mark the dates for this meeting on your calendars. We may be busy helping out, but I expect we'll also have time to attend some sessions. Sheila is an excellent conference-organizer with a lot of experience, so it should be a well-run and valuable meeting.

The only other item discussed (other than the weather) was some recent hot water gotten into by the Alamo Community College District over their web pages not being ADA-friendly. They have had to modify some of their pages. If you want to check your institutions pages for accessibility, check them out through Bobby (www.cast.org/bobby/), a free service provided by the Center for Applied Special Technology.

Our next meeting will be our annual Christmas lunch, to be held at the Trinity Faculty Club on December 8 at 11:30.

Respectfully submitted,

Kathy Amen, Secretary/Treasurer
