Our Lady of the Lake University, Sueltenfuss Library

Attendance: Camille Fiorillo, Amory Irby, Michael Kaminski, Ben Longoria, Tina Mesa, Candy Peterson, Tina Petimezas, Azucena Rodriguez-Guerra, Claudia Shaw, Ruby Wehmeyer (good to have you back, Ruby!), Steve Wise, and Kathy Amen.

Thanks to Steve for getting us out of our rut and into a new meeting place--the library is beautiful! And the folks are so friendly. It was nice to be personally welcomed by Paul Frisch, the Library Dean.

Most of the meeting was taken up with Kathy's report on the Federal Depository Library Conference she attended in October. Her web page summary is available. Biggest item causing discussion was GPO's plan to phase out microfiche shipments. Also, inspired by our host library, which would like to become a depository, we came up with a new idea for a "carrot," an incentive to improve the FDLP--loosening up the designation process. Kathy will make this suggestion to Council via their web-based comment form. They have to make a report to Public Printer Bruce James by Dec. 1 so if you have any other ideas you want them to include, let them know soon.

Steve has been diligently incorporating government information into his many instruction sessions, and also heavily in a class he is teaching in Mexican-American Studies. He is making the poor students use Census data!

OLLU and TLU, who are subscribing to the digital ERIC database, still report problems; the promised "full access" seems to be less than full.

Kathy has an unhappy (from her point of view) announcement:  Ben has taken another position at St. Mary's; he's now the cataloging technician. Kathy has been able to pilfer a good worker from the Acquisitions Dept. to replace him, though, and you all will able to meet her at the next meeting.

The meeting concluded with a nice tour of this lovely facility. Thanks again, Steve!

Our next meeting will be on Dec. 12 at the Trinity library at 10:30. Michael will show us around the new documents area (including their new compact shelving) and then we'll adjourn to the Faculty Club for our annual Christmas lunch.

Respectfully submitted,

Kathy Amen, Secretary/Treasurer
