March 13, 1998

San Antonio College Learning Resources Center

Attendance: Dorothy Blow, Chris Fau, Amory Irby, Tina Petimezas, Wilson Plunkett, Claudia Shaw, and Kathy Amen.

General information sharing again constituted most of our agenda (in addition to consuming the delicious goodies provided by our hostesses Tina and Amory).

Palo Alto apparently "lost" Marcive CATPAC during their move and we assured Chris that it IS important and she needs to see about getting it loaded, at least for staff use. NOTE: Camille informed me on 3/24 that they have CATPAC and hope to load it on their LAN soon. --KA She commented that Palo Alto will be expanding more into the agriculture and veterinary fields in the near future.

SAPL is still working on being designated a Patent Library, and it seems to be a matter of when, not if, this will happen.

TLU has been keeping track of the number of boxes they receive, which will provide useful baseline data to monitor what most of us feel is a decline in numbers of documents received. Claudia also asked for other library practices regarding check-in (electronic or paper) and cataloging of documents. A discussion ensued as to what exactly constitutes "checking-in" documents: libraries cataloging all their documents don't necessarily need to perform separate checking-in, although SAC does (paper). Kathy uses electronic checking-in (shelflisting) and has recently converted her shelflist to the Web. URL is: http://library.stmarytx.edu/acadlib/doc/us/recd/index.htm. If some of the rest of you would like to share checking-in and cataloging experiences with Claudia, let her know at: shaw_c@txlutheran.edu.

SAC's news is that they are looking for a new catalog system. They will eventually house the central computers for the district's catalogs at SAC.

Chris' inquiry about discussion lists prompted comments about the usefulness of govdoc-l, which supposedly deals with policy concerns and trends and doctech-l, which is geared toward the nitty-gritty of processing. URLs for the Govdoc-l web page describing it and how to subscribe:

The listserv address for Doctech-l is: maiser@library.lib.usu.edu. You can email the moderator, Camilla Williams, at: camwil@ngw.lib.usu.edu. Kathy has the Doctech-l user guide and will forward it to anyone who is interested. It gives detailed instructions on subscribing, etc.

Our next meeting will be at TLU on May 1 at 9:30 a.m. Those who are able to stay are invited to a dutch treat lunch in Seguin after the meeting.

Respectfully submitted,

Kathy Amen, Secretary/Treasurer
