Federal Depository Library Conference
April
2-5,
2006
Summary for San Antonio Area Documents Users Group
and Blume Library Staff
by Kathy Amen
This was another meeting that was heavy on big picture items and lightweight on educational programs. It was also very heavy on GPO and Council presentations. But at least some of the "big pictures" are becoming somewhat more "granular": we are beginning to see how some of the changes GPO is working on will impact us in the near future and further down the road. Proceedings of the conference are available here. If there are links to any individual handouts or other documents, notes are made in the appropriate sections of this summary. Many of the handouts are available in this Council document. There is also a webcast of the first plenary session available now from GPO.
These are the sections into which I have divided this report. Some sections include information taken from different presentations:
I did have a couple of ideas of things that our local documents group can work on, inspired or suggested by discussions at the meeting:
Workshop for non-docs librarians on FDSys. Once GPO's digital system gets up and running there will be things that non-depository libraries can use it for. One of the tasks that was mentioned frequently for us as depositories was to serve as trainers, or at least as repositories of expertise, in the use of this system, as well as government information generally. Maybe we could plan a workshop for area non-depository reference and/or other librarians?
Review important documents to be kept forever in print "somewhere." A collection development project.
Regarding one of our earlier ideas, digitization, the GODORT program Monday night was on digitization initiatives undertaken by some northwestern region libraries. A summary of the talks, with links to handouts, can be found here.
