Documents Data Miner 2 Search Strategies and Statistics
from the Fall 2003 FDLC
I did not attend this workshop but did pick up their detailed handouts and since DDM is such an important tool, with a lot of new features, (plus they included some interesting statistics) that I will describe these handouts in some detail.
The Search Strategies information sheet summarizes DDM2's new features and emphasizes that all the capabilities of the original DDM are available with DDM2. Then there is an overview, with detailed searching directions, of each of DDM2's modules:
- List of Classes
- Inactive or Discontinued (also can be searched from List of Classes)
- Depository Selection and Directory
- Superseded List (searchable by agency, item no., SuDocs and title)
- Shipping List Services (searchable by many categories)
- MARC Locator (linked to Shipping List module; database of GPO created records since 1990)
- URL Locator (subset of MARC Locator, records with 856's)
- Shelf Lists (data on individually shipped pieces)
- DDM2 Catalog (under development)
In addition to statistics particularly related to DDM (such as numbers of hits, etc.) the presentation included some very interesting statistics gathered through the DDM system for the FDLP as a whole. For example:
- in 1997, 28,000+ items were shipped; in 2002, only 15,767 were shipped
- volume of items shipped between 2000 and 2003 has decreased 48%
- over 3000 item numbers have had nothing shipped since 1997
- so our "true profile percentage" is much lower than our actual selection rate
- plus, active item numbers have declined 24% in the past 2 years
- between 2001-2003, there has been a 171% increase in new records with PURLS
- as of October 2003, there are 10,443 online-only records in DDM2
