Federal Trade Commission
from the 2002 FDLC
Carolyn Shanoff from the FTC gave us a tour of their website, highlighting some important information sources and some of their current "hot topics," such as identity theft. She also emphasized their consumer complaint database, urging people to submit complaints. (She noted that their spam site, www.ftc.gov/spam, actually WANTS to get spam; they often are able to get leads on outfits that need to be investigated through their spam.) They have consumer information in Spanish, and special sites devoted to topics of particular interest:
"miracle" cures: www.ftc.gov/cureall
diet programs: www.ftc.gov/dietfit
information security (their newest site): www.ftc.gov/infosecurity
id theft: www.consumer.gov/idtheft/
Carolyn's email is cshanoff@ftc.gov. They gladly send out multiple copies of their various publications to groups giving workshops, etc.
