Programs on Maps and Geography

Maps and More

The current state and future plans for the National Map were discussed in this presentation by Mark DeMulder

The vision for the future of the National Map involves creating a seamless, continuously maintained source for revised topographical maps.

The following resources were discussed and mentioned, and the observation was made that up-to-date print maps will be generated from their online digital counterparts in the future, rather than vice-versa.

Community Planning and the Public Library Geographic Database and Geolib: Using Geo Info and Government data to market your library

This presentation consisted of two parts:

Dr. Christie Koontz discussed the PLGDB, explaining how this demographic database was created to make data from the Census 2000 and library use stats from the National Center of Educational Statistics available in an interactive geospatial format, publicly accessible on the World Wide Web.

“The PLGDB is designed to offer public library decision makers access to data that can shape local, regional, and national library policies.”

Part 2 involved a presentation by Linda Fredricks, on using GIS to track users of a King County, WA public library to see if library locations were actually serving users, and to analyze location selection in relation to transportation barriers and other factors in library use by local residents. Significant points of the presentation were: GIS is a time-consuming albeit rewarding tool. It requires a dedicated position in order to deal with the most time-consuming part of a project like this, which is the geocoding of patron addresses. This project relied on data supplied by the county's GIS office, which allowed to the study to take place.
