Marcive News
from the 2002 FDLC
The Marcive users' meeting was taken up largely with Marcive's proposed pre-1976 cataloging project. They are interested in finding libraries with complete shelflists for older material, perhaps to take on as partners. Joan is not very hopeful that a cooperative venture with OCLC would ever get off the ground, although that seems like a natural partnership, viewed from the outside anyway. Besides competitive business concerns, there is also the difficulty of identifying documents in a large database like OCLC's. We also learned something rather alarming at this meeting. Marcive has discovered that as many as 30-40% of titles cataloged by GPO for some months (mainly around August of this year) were NOT on the tapes Marcive sent to users. Jim Noel thinks this is due to some new GPO catalogers skipping some of the procedural steps that usually result in records getting sent to Marcive. He hopes to eventually track down and send us these records.
