Palo Alto College Learning Resources Center

Attendance: Camille Fiorillio, Tina Mesa, Tina Petimezas, Christina Ramos, Azucena Rodriguez-Guerra, and Kathy Amen.

For such a small group we had a lot of news and information to share.

Palo Alto: Ruth Swann got a full-time job at a SAPL branch; she's missed at Palo Alto but they are happy she got such a nice job. The A&M portables are multiplying, but there is still not much definite in when or where they'll be setting up shop permanently. Camille will be teaching a module in their Advanced Research Certification class on documents. The basic Information Research Certification class did not included docs.

SAC: The SAC Library is integrating all of their materials into a circulating LC collection, even periodicals and documents, which had previously been in closed stacks. It will be something of a long-term project to find LC numbers for all their documents but they are working on it. Tina's announcement of this change initiated a discussion of circulation policies at our institutions. St. Mary's circulates almost all of their documents. The digitized copies of the SAC school newspaper, the Ranger, will soon be online. They have issues back to the 1930's.

St. Mary's: The library is starting a usability assessment of their website. We talked a bit about website maintenance, including link checking, and people asked for the Xenu link again. It's: www.viz.co.nz/xenu.htm. St. Mary's also set up a display featuring documents for Constitution Day and it was well-received. So did Palo Alto. Kathy is changing her "new docs" display shelves to a thematic display since such a large portion of new docs these days are the non-artistic Congressional hearings. The first thematic display is on natural disasters. Christina found some great maps on the FEMA website to include in the display; they're shown here at right. Kathy reminded everyone to send info on their displays to the Display Clearinghouse at the Minnesota State Univ., Mankato, website: www.lib.mnsu.edu/lib/govdoc/proj/tutorials/finalfront2.html.

Our next meeting will be at St. Mary's Blume Library on November 4 and will include reports by Michael, Jeremy and Kathy on the Depository Library Conference, to be held in DC in October.

Respectfully submitted,

Kathy Amen, Secretary/Treasurer
