Starting Points:
Texas Online. This site is maintained by the state Department of Information Resources. The most popular online services and links are listed on the main page. Following the "more" links leads to a set of subject-oriented drop-down menus that cover all kinds of state online resources, including education, recreation, crime, health, etc.
State Library and Archives Commission. You can search the State Library catalog here (an especially good source for Texas government publications) and also find links to agencies and other state information.
Texas Almanac. Not a government-sponsored site, but a reliatble one with useful information and links.
Texas Reference Sources. Compiled by the Texas Library Association, this annotated listing of books and websites about Texas is divided into some 40 subject categories. It also has an index to aid in looking for specific titles.
TRAIL (Texas Records and Information Locator). This site is designed to be an index of electronic information resources "published" by Texas agencies. It is searchable by agency name, subject, keyword or publication title. The agency listing gives contact information and statutory and regulatory information such as rules, enabling authority, etc.
Local Governments:
Texas City Links. These links are to city information of all kinds, not necessarily from government entities.
Texas Association of Regional Councils. Collection of links to regional councils (AACOG is the local one—Alamo Area Council of Governments). Includes a map in case you don't know the name of the council you need.
Legislative & Regulatory Information:
Attorney General Opinions. This page offers access to opinions by number. To search by keyword, select the "Search Opinion" link at the right. Database includes opinion back to 1939. Quick links to divisions within the AG office (Consumer Protection, Child Support, Texas-Mexico Border, Crime Victim Services, etc.) provide overviews of these important areas.
Findlaw: Texas. Collection of links to legal information including law schools, professional organizations, firms, etc. as well as legislation and regulation.
House Research Organization. This group prepares background studies on many different subjects of interest to Texas legislators, and analyses of bills up for consideration when the Legislatture is in session. Many of these reports and analyses are available online in PDF format at this site. The Library has an extensive collection of paper reports, including many that are not online, at L 1801.7 in the stacks.
Secretary of State. Includes full-text of Texas Administrative Code and recent Texas Registers, which are the Texas state equivalents of the Code of Federal Regulations and the Federal Register. Also includes election results.
Texas Legislative Council. This agency, which aids in bill drafting and legislative research, offers useful references to the Legislature, both current and historical.
Texas Legislature Online. A comprehensive source of information on legislation and the legislature. Full-text of bills, laws and the constitution from 1994 to the present.
Texas Laws and Resolutions Archive. Beginning with the 78th Legislative Session (2003) this site, a partnership between the University of North Texas and the Secretary of State's office, will provide permanent public access to all laws and resolutions passed by the Legislature. UNT also has some other digital archives of interest, and they can be accessed through their gateway.
Business and Economic Information:
Texas Business Portal. This page offers links to online services to business, such as licenses, and also resources, statistics, and contacts of interest to businesses.
Window on State Government. This site emphasizes economic information, not surprising since it comes from the Comptroller's Office. Many full-text reports on special subjects are included as well as statistics and information on taxes.
Education Information:
Texas Education Agency. The site provides information about programs, and also directory information, rulings, facts and links.
Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Directory information on admission requirements, financial aid, characteristics of Texas higher education institutions. Also some statistics.
Health Information:
Texas Department of State Health Services. Information and collections of links on diseases, drugs, safety issues, wellness and vital statistics.
Public Justice Information:
Attorney General. As well as AG opinions, the site includes links and information on crime and victims' rights. The site is searchable and includes several specialized databases.
Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Descriptive and directory information on the agency's many programs dealing with offenders and victims, as well as some other resources, including statistics.
Environmental Information:
Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. This site is loaded with content on a wide variety of environmental topics. Educational resources are included. There is a publications list with links to online titles.
Texas Water Development Board. Statistics and information on topics of interest such as drought. There is a good collection of links to water information sites elsewhere on the web.
Virtual Landscapes of Texas. A collection of digitized documents reflecting early writing on the geology and environment of Texas, provided by the University of Texas Libraries.
Weather, Traffic and Travel Information:
Texas Department of Public Safety. In addition to drivers' license information, this site provides emergency and weather information. There is a link to the Transportation Dept.'s road conditions page.
Texas Parks & Wildlife Dept. Information on state parks, historical sites, hunting and fishing regulations. Here is a page with an interactive map for finding sites by location.
Transportation Department. Includes road conditions and tourism information in addition to information on transportation issues and programs.
Transguide. Check out local (San Antonio) traffic conditions.
