Individual Exhibitions of Note:

NOTE: As of January, 1999, (with some exceptions) this section is no longer updated.

Some of these exhibitions are only virtual, others have Real Life counterparts in the actual museums. Note that some of the virtual exhibitions require advanced browser versions, additional plug-ins, and large amounts of bandwidth to experience in their entirety.

South Texas Border, 1900-1920: Photographs from the Robert Runyon Collection. Photographs taken by this commercial photographer document important events and development in the Lower Rio Grande Valley area.

Virtual Tour of Dinosaur Exhibits at National Museum of Natural History. You can view photographs of a portion of the Museum's collection of dinosaur bones, searching by species name, group or geological period. Photographs are accompanied by descriptive information. Other educational resources on the site include geological timelines and, under "Special Tours," information on dinosaur anatomy, museum operations, and other topics.

Van Gogh's Van Goghs. An exhibit of 70 paintings by Vincent Van Gogh from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam are at the National Gallery of Art through the end of the year. This site has information for physical visitors to the exhibition, plus a virtual tour and links to other Van Gogh resources.

America From the Depression to World War II: Photographs From the FSA-OWI,1935-1945. This is the most impressive section on the Library of Congress' American Memory site, an online collection of 45,000 black and white and 1600 color photographs from the Farm Security Administration-Office of War Information Collection. Included are some of the "most famous documentary photographs ever produced."

Religion and the Founding of the American Republic. This is an online companion to a Real Life exhibit on display at the Library of Congress from June 4 - August 22, 1998. The exhibit consists of over 200 objects in various media, and "explores the role religion played in the founding of the American colonies, in the shaping of early American life and politics, and in forming the American Republic."

Star Wars; the Magic of Myth. This is a virtual counterpart to the Real Life exhibition that will be on display at the National Air and Space Museum through January, 1999. The exhibition "examines the mythology beneath the Star Wars story," acknowledging how science fiction has "stimulated the imaginations of many scientists in the forefront of discovery, encouraged young people to choose the sciences as a career, and shaped our visions and expectations of future space travel."

Posters American Style. This is an online companion to a traveling Real Life exhibition from the National Museum of American Art which explores the making and use of posters in "commerce, propaganda, and patriotism."
