Evaluating Information

How to find
Literary Criticism

Literary criticism analyzes, interprets, or evaluates a work of literature. This guide lists only a few of the reference tools that contain or refer to literary criticism. Ask a Reference Librarian for assistance in choosing or using a literary criticism resource. If you are writing your own critique of a literary work, see the guide to Writing a Critique produced by the Learning Assistance Center

  • Indexes with a + (plus) preceding their name are available through that link only to St. Mary's students, faculty, and staff from off-campus, because of contractual restrictions from the vendors. For more information, read Restricted Databases Instructions.
  • For more information about the subscription databases listed to the left, see the Louis J. Blume Library Database Descriptions page.

+ Literature Resource Center - Recommended starting point, the database that contains biographies, bibliographies, and critical analyses of more than 120,000 authors from every age and literary discipline. Includes Scribner Writer's Series with 15-20 page signed essays on more than 1,600 authors and literary genres drawn from 13 acclaimed Scribner print series. Twayne World, US, and English Authors each contain the full text of 200 frequently used Twayne Literary Masters books on individual World, US, or English authors, for a total of 600 full-text titles.

The print counterpart to the Literature Resource Center database and earlier material may be found in the following collected critical evaluations, containing portions of critical discussions about authors and their literary works. These collections should be considered a starting point only. Whenever possible, try to find the original source of the discussion or try to find additional background material (in journal articles and books, for example).

Some collected evaluations are comprehensively indexed together and are published by Gale Research.

  1. Look in the author index in one of the last volumes of any of the series below.

Provides complete biographical and bibliographical references for nearly 100,000 authors from the U.S. and around the world.

+ Contemporary Literary Criticism--Select "presents significant published criticism on the works of novelists, poets, playwrights, short story writers, and other creative writers now living or who died after December 31, 1959. A strong emphasis is placed on including criticism of works by established authors who frequently appear on syllabi of high school and college literature courses. Each entry contains the following: a biographical essay that discusses the author's life, works, and critical importance; critical essays or excerpts taken from books, magazines, literary reviews, newspapers, and scholarly journals; and, where available, interviews with featured authors. A complete bibliographical citation prefaces each critical essay and most essays are introduced by a brief annotation that establishes a context and purpose for the criticism. Entries also provide suggestions for further reading." 266 entries from the most-studied authors who appear in volumes 1-94 of the print version are included, as well as representation of authors who appear in volumes 95+.

In addition to full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for more than 9,300 journals and a total of 10,900 publications including monographs, reports, conference proceedings, etc. The database features PDF content going back as far as 1865, with the majority of full text titles in searchable PDF format. Because the library does not own every journal included in these indexes or databases, you will need to verify if the library has access to the specific periodical you seek.
    • To verify if we have access to a journal or periodical, see "Locating Journals (Magazines, & Newspapers in the Blume Library)" for information about determining availability of a particular periodical issue. This service shows you which periodicals we have full-text access to, whether electronically or in print. We have access to over 18,000 full-text periodical titles online, through our subscription (aggregator) databases.
    • Ask a Reference Librarian (210-436-3508) if you have any questions. The more information you provide about your situation, the better able we are to answer your question.
    • If we do not not have a journal article you want, students, staff, and faculty may order it through Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Journal article and book request forms are available online through the library web site. Be sure to allow time to receive the ordered items.
    • Alternatively, if St. Mary's University does not have access to a journal you need, you may search the + WorldCat (OCLC FirstSearch) database to determine which libraries in the area own the periodical containing the article you need. You may limit your search to "Serial Publications" to focus your search on journal titles.

To determine whether we have a specific book in the library, check the library catalog to see if we own or have access to the item.

    • Hint: Start your research early so you know if we have the articles you need!

Biographical information is available through many of the above resources. The following resources may provide additional information:

+ Gale Virtual Reference Library includes searchable full-text of several encyclopedias including the Encyclopedia of World Biography, American Women Writers: A Critical Reference Guide from Colonial Times to the Present, and Feminism in Literature: A Gale Critical Companion.

+ LEXIS-NEXIS Academic is a full-text legal and news database available to the St. Mary's University community. This service allows users to access newspaper, magazine, and news wire information, as well as other reference sources. Coverage of sources is generally from the mid-1980s to the present.
    • Under Reference, the Biographical Information category may provide background information about the author.
    • The General News Topics category may provide biographical information about contempory authors as well as reviews of contemporary works.

The library catalog will lead you to books we have at St. Mary's University. There are several ways you can search for materials:
    • Subject Browse: Type the name of the author (last name, first name) or the genre or topic in literature. You will see an alphabetical listing of subject headings. For example:

American fiction -- 20th century -- History and criticism.

    Brooks, Gwendolyn

Drama -- 19th century -- History and criticism.

Poetry, Medieval -- History and criticism.
    • Advanced Keyword or Advanced Boolean searches are helpful if you don't know the specific subject heading for your topic. This option searches across the title, subject, and contents fields (chapters, stories, poems, etc. in books) for your terms.
