Country Information

A. Country information sites

B. Using search engines
Each search engine may have slightly different conventions for entering the search statement in search box. However, a couple general strategies are:
    • Use upper and lower case letters (rather than all capitals or all lower case)
    • Use quotation marks (" ") if the company name is more than one word
    • Use plus signs (+) directly in front of words or phrases if combining two or more words or phrases (or use AND)
Once connected to the search engine, try typing +"Burkino Faso" +voyage in the search box to find travel information about the country of Benin.

These are a couple search engines I recommend:

  • MetaCrawler (http://www.go2net.com/search.html) - Simultaneously searches seven search engines and ranks hits by relevancy. Will retrieve Spanish and English-language web sites.
  • HotBot (http://www.hotbot.com) - Allows you to limit your search to Spanish language sites.
  • Altavista (http://altavista.digital.com) - A popular search engine that will retrieve lots of hits.
C. Other sources of information

Company Information

Company web sites can be accessed in one of three ways:

  • by using the company's name in the body of the URL (uniform resource locator or address),
  • through search engines, or
  • through business information or meta-sites.
Not all company web sites are created equally. Some companies may place their annual report or other financial information on their web site, while others may have only product information (if that!) on their site.

If you have trouble locating a company's web site through the strategies above:

  • Determine if the company is a subsidiary or division of another company. If so, try searching for the parent company through the above strategies.
  • Keep in mind that not all companies have web sites!
A. Using the company's name in the body of the URL
Try using the company's name in the subdomain of the URL or address.  For example, to find the web site for Airbus Industrie, type www.airbus.com in the Location Or Netsite box near the top of the Netscape browser and press <Enter>. This should connect you to the Airbus web site.

You might initially be connected to an English-language version web site, but many of these companies with have a Spanish-language version, too.

B. Using search engines
Each search engine may have slightly different conventions for entering the search statement in search box. However, a couple general strategies are:
    • Use upper and lower case letters (rather than all capitals or all lower case)
    • Use quotation marks if the company name is more than one word
Once connected to the search engine, try typing "Compagnie des Machines Bull" in the search box to find the company web site.

These are a couple search engines I recommend:

  • MetaCrawler (http://www.go2net.com/search.html) - Simultaneously searches seven search engines and ranks hits by relevancy. Will retrieve Spanish and English-language web sites.
  • HotBot (http://www.hotbot.com) - Allows you to limit your search to Spanish web sites.
  • Altavista (http://altavista.digital.com) - A popular search engine that will retrieve more than just the company home page.
C. Using business information meta-sites
