Bible Dictionaries

Bible dictionaries define words found in scripture.

The following are examples of one-volume Bible dictionaries that are located in the Reference area on the Second (Main) Floor of the Blume Library: 

  • Eerdmans Bible Dictionary. Ed. Allen C. Myers. Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans, 1987. (REF BS 440 .G7613 1987)
  • Harper's Bible Dictionary. Ed. Paul J. Achtemeier. San Francisco: Harper & Row, 1985. (REF BS 440 .H237 1985
  • The Revell Bible Dictionary. Old Tappan, NJ: Fleming H. Revell, 1990. (REF BS 440 .R484 1990)
    • Contains many color and black and white illustrations, a chronology of the historical Biblical events (under "Chronology"), maps, and separate quick indexes of people and places mentioned in the Bible.

The following is a multi-volume Bible dictionary located in the Reference area on the Second (Main) Floor of the Blume Library: 

  • The Anchor Bible Dictionary. Eds. David Noel Freedman, et al. New York: Doubleday, 1992. 6 vols. (REF BS 440 .A54 1992)

There are several free Bible dictionaries available through the Internet. However the entries in these free dictionaries are often briefer and older than what one might find in a print dictionary. Compare the entry you find in an online dictionary with the same term in several of the print dictionaries above.
