A Year in South Texas
by Peter Holland

ISBN: 978-1-931247-67-2 $7

A Year in South Texas is Peter Holland’s view of the land he grew up with. In lush romantic tones, redolent of the treatment of nature in the lake country by the earlier English romantics, Holland presents his Texas: a land of extremes, of stark beauty, from barren winters to summer droughts to the delicate unfolding of Texas wildflowers.

Texas Still Life

The beetle,
metallic green,
walks across
the yellow-white caliché,
steps into the shade
of a lobey old Prickly Pear.
The Mockingbird,
sleekly silver,
strikes a pose
beside a lemon yellow flower.
The green cactus,
her yellow flower,
and the silver bird
stand out
on the green field
washed in blue
splashed with crimson.
Tomorrow the dozers will come
civilizing chaos.
